Pathfinder Tales Gears of Faith eBook Gabrielle Harbowy

The story of a Paladin and her Gnome companion, this novel explores a nice range of character challenges and growth as well as a fantasy setting that are all expertly woven into a potentially earth-shattering plot. The author does a great job of inserting characters with some but limited expertise (but not overblown power) into a potentially epic tale. It all flows into a fantasy plot that makes sense while also presenting twists and turns challenging the characters' faith as well as threatening potentially world-changing, epochal events.

As much as I enjoyed the two protagonists (as well as the surrounding characters), my favorite character may have been their smart and energetic (but still plenty canine) mount, friend and pet, Appleslayer. Other readers who are fans of having an animal (in this case a wonderfully fluffy, strong, and dedicated dog) play an important (but yet also realistic and not overblown) role in a story will appreciate this interesting (but not over-the-top) canine character.

As a reader who enjoys fantasy novels as well as playing role-playing games, I very much appreciated the author's ability to introduce to utilize a typical RPG set-up and quest and seamlessly weave the game mechanics and setting into a compelling story with unique and interesting characters. In particular, as one who plays the Pathfinder roleplaying game, I found the game mechanics to be faithfully included, but the prose addressed the RPG aspects in a natural and logical manner, reading more like a magical, fantasy story rather than a replay of a game.

4.5 stars rounded up for the prominent but not over blown role for Appleslayer

Pathfinder Tales Gears of Faith eBook Gabrielle Harbowy Reviews

An enjoyable read, though a little light on plot. I'd like to see these characters on another adventure, one with a little more gravitas. I felt the book's ending was a little lackluster though it certainly wasn't a bad read.
Loved this book. I wish there had been an extra chapter or two.. I would have loved to hear more conversations between Keren and her Priestess and Trainer. Hearing about her learning more Divine Spells would have been frosting on the cake.
The book was a hit. The characters are well designed and the author does a super job of pulling you into the story.
I really liked this. A lot of times game-related fiction can read more like a transcript of a game session but Gabrielle weaves things like spells and monsters into the story seamlessly. Zae and Keren aren't just damage-application machines but are well-developed and have distinct personalities and a cool relationship. Highly recommended.
Sent for training in the city of Absalom, partners Kaeren and Zae, (with Appleslayer their trusty dog mount) arrive to discover that an artifact sacred to Kaerens order is somewhere in the city, and agents of Geb are searching for it. As the two go through their training, they must unravel the mystery of who took the Bloodstone and recover it before the artifact is lost forever.

This is one of the best books I have read (finished it in two days). The couple is brought to life, not only while they are going about their day to day activites, but also their personal relationship. I would love to see a sequel to this pair (and little dog too) to see how their lives and love expands.
Some dogs are mentioned in the acknowledgements. One is Rufus the Samoyed. I am Rufus's human and we have known Gabrielle for years. That is to say, I am entirely biased.

I bought Gears of Faith on impulse to support a friend and it lingered on my nightstand for a while. I finally picked it up and one thing led to another and there I was changing plans to read more.

I am new to Pathfinder. Everything I know revolves around Appleslayer, Zae, Keren, and Rowan. I fell in love with the characters and immersed in their world easily. I thoroughly enjoyed Pathfinder Tales Gears of Faith and - bias aside - I hope we all get to cross paths with its heroes again.
Out of 12 Pathfinder Tales I have read, Gears of Faith is my second favorite. Gabrielle Harbowy does an excellent job using the Pathfinder universe and rule books to paint a fascinating picture of Absalom and the characters. I really enjoy when she describes a feat, spell or combat action in such a way that it seems like normal life. GMs will love the settings and newbies to Pathfinder get a clear glimpse of what the world is all about.
