great college help
just another normal overpriced book for college.
It is older edition but the book was in really great shape and the price was fantastic.
Just as described.
The narration of this book is based more on the opinion and story of the author rather than an informative textbook. I only bought this book because it was required for one of my classes, otherwise, I would not have even considered it at all.
Has all the instruments and music from all of the cultures from around the world. I bought it for my music class and I had to read every page and know every instrument that each culture plays. Some of the names of instruments are extremely hard to remember for tests and quizzes. In the end I passed my class, but I feel If I read more I could of done better.
This was the required text from my Music History III, World Music class this last semester. The professor used it because it was cheap and he hadn't yet adjusted the his curriculum for the 6th edition.

Pros This book is very good in the fact that each chapter is by a ethnomusicologist specializing in their personal area of study. Therefore the book is filled with first hand accounts that are quite detailed and interesting.

Cons Strange miss prints and the flow of the book is a little puzzling (things that are corrected in the 6th edition).

Bottom Line If you want to learn about world music cheap buy this book (DO NOT FORGET THE CD's THEY ARE IMPORTANT). If your prof is requiring you to get the 6th edition and you think the 5th will be cheaper, then your screwing yourself over.
