This book is an invaluable resource that fills an important gap in the probability literature. There are numerous excellent books on probability theory and stochastic processes. These books focus primarily on the introduction and exposition of key concepts with relatively limited emphasis on real-world applications. Moreover, most of the fundamental books dedicate limited to no time to numerical studies and simulations that are based on such applications. This excellent book, written by one of the giant researchers in the areas of probability, optimization, and control, fills all these gaps by organizing all the key probability concepts from an application point of view. It covers topics that span web searches, speech recognition, tracking, communication, networking, etc., with clear connection to all the crowning concepts of probability, including Markov Chains, limit theorems, stochastic optimization, optimal control, inference. Each application area is presented at two levels (basic and advanced) that make their study and presentation very accessible adaptable to the background and the interests of the reader(s). Also, the matlab coding exercises allow the reader to actively engage in investigating the applications that we benefit from on a daily basis.
This is an exceptional resource that every probability enthusiast at every level (beyond high school) can enjoy and learn deeply from. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Probability in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science An ApplicationDriven Course Jean Walrand 9780615899367 Books Reviews
This is the ultimate probability book of the information age for EECS students, a book whose time has come. It inverts the usual order of things, starting with concrete individual engineering problems that have mattered, and using them to introduce some basic probability in a lucid manner. The list of chapters reads PageRank, multiplexing, tracking, speech recognition, etc., and what you learn en passant is Chebyshev inequality, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, Markov chains, Markov decision processes, and so on, so you get the idea. Written by one of the best persons to blend the two, it is strongly recommended either as a stand-alone course or as supplementary reading, there is none other like this.
Excellent book for those involved in simulation work.
The most helpful book in applied probability I've read. I've already used quite a few concepts in my research and internship as an undergrad.
A superb textbook/reference book for first-year graduate students in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, written by one of the best people in this field. Many powerful tools are explained together with modern applications, in a lucid and friendly manner. I really enjoy reading it. A "must-have" for anyone working on stochastic systems!
Guiding into the topic of statistical and probabilistic methods by applications is unusual at first, but starts to give a lot of insight. Theory is provided in extra chapters, containing necessary background and proofs of theorems. I really like the background context of the applications shedding light on achievements of great scientists and engineers. Their portraits make the theorems and algorithms a bit more human and ‘likeable’ . In all an excellent study book, which makes you want to have more of its kind.
