She was created by the gods as a gift to humanity. Then there was the urn.

Pandora, the first woman on Earth, was endowed with many gifts beauty, intelligence, domesticity, and curiosity. She was at once lover, sympathiser and nurturer. Zeus presented an urn as her wedding dowry. Neither she nor her husband, Epimethos knew what it contained inside, and Hermes, the Messenger, warned them never to open it.

So the story goes… according to Grandpa.

Two precocious children visit their grandfather and beg him to tell a story. It wasn’t ‘on a dark and stormy night’ or ‘once upon a time’ type of story either.

Boxed in a Curse Accursed Women Book 4 eBook Luciana Cavallaro

Perth historian and teacher Luciana Cavallaro is adept at weaving ageless legends within a modern motif, and in this case, a fable that can also hold children spellbound. Many Christian legends about the first man and woman on earth have obviously been transposed from Ancient Greek mythology. The author juxtaposes the two in her own unique style. She depicts many scenes between mortals and immortals with vivid detail, almost as though she was there in person at the time. This along with the modern setting in which she places Pandora's story made 'Boxed In A Curse' such a relevant and enjoyable read for me. Boxed in a Curse Accursed Women Book 4 eBook Luciana Cavallaro Reviews

This is a very short story, at 40 pages in length, and is the 4th part of a series of shorts about Famous Greek women by this Author.

As the title suggests, this little novella is all about Pandora. However, we don't hear the tale of her encounter with the box through her own words, but rather it is told through the eyes of a grandparent relating the story to their family. Despite this method of storytelling, Pandora really does come over as being a very strong and capable woman, one the reader can actually like.

I always enjoy new twists on old myths, classic novel or legends and this easy read did not fail to deliver. The Author obviously researched the Pandora myth to provide more substance and details to it, as well as providing her writers imagination. In doing this the Author manages to remove a lot of the preconceptions people have when hearing the name Pandora, and also went someway to removing the stigma that surrounded women in, not only Greek mythology but throughout a lot of that period's history. By doing this the Author reveals a highly intelligent woman who had trouble fitting into her `assigned place' in a world run by men.

After reading this, I definitely will be reading the other shorts in this series, and hope that eventually the Author will combine them all in one edition. I would recommend this for anyone that is looking for a quick, but thought-provoking read.

Pandora and Jason are excited to spend some time at their grandfather's house, because he promised to tell them a story. Little did they know, that this tale would explain human nature throughout time.

Luciana Cavallaro uses the familial relationship between a grandfather and his grandchildren to take readers on a mystical journey. Transported straight into Greek Mythology, readers will get to live the story of Pandora and her mysterious urn. Luciana Cavallaro demonstrates superb accuracy, by making sure her stories line up with every detail known in Greek Mythology. Though this story is a bit different than her other works, readers will still appreciate the author's style. Fans of Greek Mythology need to take note of Luciana Cavallaro.

I know I have stated this numerous times, but I absolutely love Greek Mythology tales. What impressed me was the fact that she wrote this tale from several gods' perspectives and wrote about the urn! Through re-telling and time, Pandora's Urn was changed to Pandora's Box. The author took an appreciative amount of time to describe in detail her perception of the urn and what was released from the urn. I only wished this story was a bit longer, so I could experience the rest of what the box had to offer. However the ending, left me smiling!

[Full disclosure Luciana Cavallaro sent me a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.]

Unlike the other two stories about famous Greek women that I've read by Luciana Cavallaro, we don't get to hear Pandora's story from her own lips. That's why I was initially a little apprehensive about reading her newest short story, but I was worried over absolutely nothing. Despite hearing a second hand account of her life, Pandora came across as yet another strong woman who was given the short end of the stick in later stories.

Although I'm an avid fan of Greek mythology and have been for many years, I actually learned a lot from Boxed in a Curse. The Pandora myth was never very detailed and I love how Luciana Cavallaro researched for more details as well as added in her own believable ones. Instead of accepting the `she was just really curious' version of events, she delved deeper into the myth and peeled away the theme of `women are evil' that's found quite a bit in Greek myths. No, Pandora is not evil or just curious. She was a complex woman who really didn't know how to act in a world full of men but was still intelligent and strong.

Told through the eyes of a grandfather telling his grandchildren the story, we're really transported back to that ancient time when humanity was new. It doesn't really feel like we're being told what's happening, but rather it's described very well and the narrator allows us to draw our own conclusions about the `moral' of the story and about Pandora's character. Does all of the blame for humanity's ills lie squarely at her feet? Of course not! I don't want to give too much away, but after reading Boxed in a Curse you'll definitely have more sympathy for the first woman.

I give this short story 5/5 stars.
One of the world's oldest tales told in a new and masterful manner. Absolutely loved the interaction between the three generations and how Papou spun the tale in a fun manner that kept the attention of both children. Loved the ending, but won't comment on it. Don't want to give anything away. Very nice piece written in a fashion that will entertain young and old alike!
This work is a good fictionalized account of Greek mythology. No pictorial depiction becomes necessary as the author's imagination flows rich throughout the narration. This allows a clear visualization of all happenings. Human nature and hope come out well in the story. And of course the climax is fantastic as can be expected from an author inspired by historical fantasy. Children should not miss this book and adults just let go and enjoy it)
