I really hate rating any of Jessica Sorensen's work below 5 starts because she is a great writer and I enjoy most everything she puts out. Unfortunately I was disappointed in this book. The characters were great, great story line and great writing (as always) but nothing happens in this book. Basically the characters meet and start to get to know each other. That is about it. I was so disappointed. It was a start to a series in which I am sure the entire story will be everything I want but I was expecting something more to happen in this besides the characters meeting each other. Maybe if it was released as a novella (it is pretty short) I would not have felt robbed of a story I felt I should have.

Honestly, I am also getting a little tired of having to read 3-4 'short' stories in order to get to an ending. Such a shame because I really enjoy her writing and her stories, I just hate having to wait months in between to get to a finish. I'd rather have the whole story in one place.

Unraveling You Jessica Sorensen 9781496134271 Books Reviews

I really enjoy quick, easy reads like this, and I really like Jessica's writing style.

Lyric is a musical guru, and all she wants is to perform, and write amazing song lyrics, but that's next to impossible when your parents have given you such a loving upbringing. Enter Ayden, who has far too much life experience for his young age. His memory is suppressing itself from the pain of his past, but as him and Lyric grow closer, and the unthinkable happens to his brother, can he face his fears and terrible past to give himself a chance at a better future?

Beware this does end on a cliffhanger, but luckily I was able to start the next one right away, and I find myself not wanting to put this story down.
5 raw and gritty stars

I loved this. LOVED. This is exactly the type of book I lose myself in. Best friends Ayden and Lyric are 2 souls that just had this perfect yin and yang, this perfect balance, as if their relationship beautifully ebbed and flowed together. These two just spoke to me from the very first page. This story had a similar emotionally vulnerable vibe as Jessica Sorensen’s Breaking Nova series (I gave every book in that series 5 stars too), but the storyline is totally different so it’s something new.

This installment introduces us to the two characters, and we get to know them as they get to know each other. They grow closer in such a natural way, and it only made sense for them to push the lines of friendship into something more. Yet, they both know how much things could change, and they aren’t sure if they are even ready.

Ayden is quiet, sad, incredibly kind, and so mysterious. But he isn’t just mysterious to everyone around him, he is also a bit mysterious to himself. We realize as the story progresses just how horrible his childhood has been, and just like Lyric, I wanted to be there for him, to just love him.

Lyric is happy, good, kind, but a little lost. However, as soon as she and Ayden become friends it was as if birds started singing. Their friendship made each of them so much more whole.

The romance in this book is subtle, it’s sweet, and it’s slow. But that is ok because good things take time, my friends. I’d classify this as a mature YA. I have a feeling we’ll get more love in the next book, but it’s certainly not going to be easy.

The ending was tough. I didn’t realize how much of a mystery/suspense there was to this story, but there actually is. I can’t recommend this book enough, and I cannot wait to continue the journey that belongs to Ayden and Lyric. I know my heart is going to be hurt, it’s going to be ugly, but I’m hoping by the end there is healing.

Rec this? YES! If you love deeply emotional stories, while even though they are full of pain, there is hope, this is a must for your TBR.

Happy reading!
Jessica Sorensen never disappoints. Unraveling You is a very short book, as it only sets you up for the beginning of Ayden and his story. I am so glad I have books two and three on hand as well, as I need to know more!
I absolutely love that this story shows a family who is adopting older children. Not only that, but the adoptive parents are amazing! They are supportive, caring, and loving towards the children. It is rare to see this in books around kids/teens in foster care as these stories normally show the abuse with the adoptive/foster parents. I was very happy to see that this was not the case with Unraveling You.

This story does start to unravel the abuse Ayden was subjected too while in the care of his drug addict mother who left her three children with horrible neighbors. You only get glimpse into what happened, but you know that is horrible.

This story also deals with rape, suicide, drugs, alcohol, and suggests sexual abuse. Again, it only really hits the surface but it is good to know these triggers before starting this series. You can tell this is going to take a very intense and emotional turn as the series continues.

Overall, this is the perfect read when you need something quick and fast paced. I am ready to jump into book two.
